Church Road, Wembury
spectacular views of Wembury Bay and within walking distance of the
beach, this house was calling out for a bit of extra space and a better
connection to its surroundings.
The original house sits in an extensive wooded plot elevated from the
road with views over the bay. The clients grew up in the property
and have recently relocated back to Devon with their own
children. Extended previously in a piecemeal way, and with
planning permission already obtained for further non descript
additions, a rethink was required to really maximise the potential of
the plot and the connections to the surroundings.
The new proposals took a radical approach, stripping the house back to
its original core and introducing a light filled atrium and hallway
around which the accommodation is now arranged. Allowing views
from the front door to the sea, this space creates a sense of
connection to the surroundings and draws you through the house.
To one side of this atrium sits the original house, and to the other
the original has been mirrored. The extended ground floor is now
opened up to the garden and the sea with all of the main rooms -
kichen, dining, living - connected to the garden and view.
Upstairs, four double bedrooms are arranged around the double height
atrium. In an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, great care was
taken to ensure that the forms and materials were appropriate and
complimentary to the surroundings, but not hiding from view. The
additions, clad in slate, become a shadow of the original form hunkered
into the hillside and foliage.
